Samuel H. Chittenden was employed as a survey engineer during construction of the Union Pacific transcontinental rail line in 1868. George Benjamin Chittenden was born in Conn. in Dec. 1849. A graduate of Yale University, he worked as a topographer for the U. S. Geological and Geographic Survey of the Territories conducted by Ferdinand V. Hayden in Colo. and Wyo. (1873-1877). Known as the Hayden Survey, the surveys helped define the Western U.
